Katrina & Rita Response
<Previous

Sept 4, 2005
Team Deployment

What an amazing day! Today we took 23 people, almost all of whom we had never met, put them on two planes, and flew them to Baton Rouge. Then we loaded the DC3 with about 3000 lb of cargo, and it flew to BTR also. Afterward we returned to HQ to continue the work, minus our fearless leader (Stan), who was flying the DC3. After burning up the phones for a while, we headed to Shoney's for a working lunch. Dan, one of the volunteers, had been up with basically no sleep for at least 72 hours, and was running on the ragged edge of exhaustion.

We returned to HQ, and continued to work the phones, getting reports from the field of the conditions they were encountering, which were pretty positive. We appear to have saturated Livingston Parish, and have deployed several groups into other areas. One group went to New Orleans to vaccinate the police and fire personel there.

So what is success here? That we delivered the people that we were asked for, or that patients were treated? If it is the former, then we have been VERY successful. If the latter, not as much so, but we're still exhausted and mostly satisfied.

Tomorrow, I'll be flying the 206 with one or two doctors down to Baton Rouge by way of Tullahoma, TN, to pick up medicines. After I depart, it is unclear how often I will be able to update my journal.

Pax.
