Katrina & Rita Response
<Previous

Sept 6, 2005

After a fitful night on a comfortable bed with just enough covers to be cold, I got up for my second hot shower in less than 12 hours at around 0540 local time, hit the road by 0620, and arrived at the airport at 0720. Plans were to airlift a family to Texas in the DC3, and we made ready to do so, getting some repairs done on the DC3 and measuring our fuel levels. A couple of hours later, we learned by telephone that the trip had been canceled, reason not given. The rest of the day consisted of waiting for something to happen.

I was happy to find that our "basecamp" at the church was mostly deserted. I take that to mean that our volunteers have been assigned out for the most part. I hope to have a better update on their projects later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm currently trying to find a more optimum airfield for us then BTR, which is the center of most search and rescue operations for New Orleans. I should have a better handle on this venture by tomorrow night, also.

In general, our group has been upbeat, and everyone has gone out at least once by this point. We're not as busy and involved as we had hoped before we arrived, but we are involved, and making a difference in the lives of shelter residents in our area.
