Katrina & Rita Response

After the massive response from donors for hurricane relief for the devastated Gulf Coast after Katrina, Stan Brock saw an opportunity to help the people of New Orleans through a more traditional RAM expedition.

A great deal of work went into the ensuing expedition. The location turned out to be the Audubon Zoo, which was only open for business on weekends. The RAM team, with over a thousand volunteers from

all over the US, saw patients for seven days straight, providing vision, dental, and medical services to thousands of people from the New Orleans area.

The backdrop of a zoo seemed oddly appropriate for RAM, an organization accustomed to working in the wilder places on Earth. Giraffes looked on as we made eyeglasses, and the sounds of monkeys and elephants could be heard at times in the dental area.

Below are links to Wayne Smith's journal, written each night during the expedition. While they only reflect one person's experience, the reader might get an idea of what a RAM expedition might be like.
