New Orleans, LA : Hurricane Katrina Follow-Up Expedition
February 5-12, 2006

During the expedition to New Orleans, LA, 1,350 Remote Area Medical® Volunteers mounted possibly the largest free medical clinic initiative ever held in the US.

Thousands of Katrina victims lined up to receive much needed Medical, Dental and Vision care. Many regular healthcare services were simply not available to area residents due to post-Katrina flooding.

We registered 5,212 patients and provided 19,864 Medical, Dental and Vision services valued at $1,893,040.00!

Working in cooperation with the New Orleans Health Department, using a computerized registration system supported by Dell and Intel, we recreated a basic medical record for each patient, which was then stored on portable media and given to the patient.

Volunteers made more than 1,300 pairs of glasses and pulled more than 3,000 teeth during our week in New Orleans. Hundreds of other necessary procedures were also performed by a willing and skilled staff.
