Like many Remote Area Medical (RAM®) supporters, Leigh first heard of RAM through the 2008 episode of 60 Minutes. Hearing Stan Brock talk about RAM and our mission inspired her to become involved. She’s been a donor for years, recently started volunteering, and soon will be a CORE Volunteer with RAM.
Getting Involved With RAM
She’d been a donor for years, and in October of 2025 she volunteered at her first RAM Clinic in patient registration.
“Our two biggest things are our time and our money. And if you have the ability to choose how you want to spend those, then I think this is a lovely way to do either,” said Leigh.
She not only helped patients register for the clinic, but she was also able to interpret for many Spanish speaking patients during registration.
At her second RAM Clinic in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Leigh volunteered in a different area of the clinic. This time she was in vision, helping patients find the perfect pair of frames for their new pair of glasses.
For Leigh, helping people pick out glasses is a way to empower them. To make them feel confident and comfortable in their new glasses.
“It’s a lot of patient interaction, and you can, like, really empower people in these moments . . .” Leigh said. “No one dislikes being told when they look good in something. And so, it’s nice to have that moment, especially when you’ve been sitting in the cold all night.”
Making a Personal Connection with Patients

If you keep up with our blog posts and patient stories, Leigh may look familiar. She was the volunteer that helped Grace and her boyfriend decide on their new pairs of glasses.
While Grace and Leigh tried on many different frames, they spent the time laughing and finding the pair that was perfect for Grace. They were also pulling aside ones for her boyfriend to try on too. This was one of the most impactful connections Leigh made throughout her time volunteering at the clinic.
The laughing and having someone to help her decide on her new frames was part of what helped keep Grace comfortable and at ease throughout the clinic process. Though she’s often afraid of doctors and medical professionals, volunteers, including Leigh, made the process much easier.
Grace was not the only patient that made a lasting impact for Leigh, she also enjoyed getting to help children pick out their frames. For kids like Reyes, the RAM Clinic was the first time they were able to get a pair of glasses.

Patients stopped Leigh left and right to as for her opinion on the frames they’d chosen, to make sure they’d gotten the pair that was the best fit for them.
Volunteering and Becoming a CORE Volunteer
As a general support volunteer Leigh also spent the day before the clinic helping to set up. Making sure everything was ready to go first thing in the morning for patients. With the ever-present need for RAM’s services throughout the country, this felt like a great way for her to make a difference.
These two weekends of volunteering and seeing RAM’s work in action encouraged Leigh to apply to become a CORE Volunteer. Our CORE Volunteers are leaders in their trained areas. They travel with us around the country to make sure the clinics are able to function smoothly.
Not only does Leigh plan to return to volunteer in the future, hopefully as a CORE Volunteer, but she’s invited other people in her life to volunteer as well.
Being a RAM Donor
Leigh has been a RAM donor for many years, since she first watched our founder, Stan Brock, on 60 Minutes, showing the world who RAM is and what we do.
For her, including RAM in her monthly expenses was an easy choice. She took comfort in knowing that her monthly donation was something RAM could count on each month, to help us continue serving patients across the country.
“[Donating] was just like a little way to contribute and support the mission — just because it sounded incredible,” Leigh said.
Become a donor like Leigh to help RAM continue breaking down barriers to care.
