When we say Remote Area Medical’s (RAM®) clinics are free, there is no fine print. When people hear this, many expect a catch, that it can’t really be ‘free healthcare.’ There isn’t one. No insurance required. No bill later. The only investment is a few hours of your time.
People often think our free healthcare clinics are “too good to be true,” because there’s “no way it can really be free.” RAM clinics remain free because removing cost is one of the most powerful ways to reduce barriers to care. Free, quality dental, vision, and medical care – it’s who we are.
Is Free Healthcare Low Quality?
Some people assume free care means lower quality. That assumption doesn’t hold true at RAM Clinics. Every patient receives care from licensed professionals focused on solving the immediate problem. RAM maintains the same professional standards expected in traditional clinical settings.
RAM providers are licensed professionals or advanced students working under licensed supervision. Many give up their weekends to volunteer and serve their communities.
RAM also ensures that every clinic meets the compliance standards required in each state where it operates. We do this to ensure that our patients get the best care possible at our clinics.
Follow Up and Preventative Care
Through things like over-the-counter pain management medications, follow up care instructions, and resources for additional care, RAM also helps patients continue their care after the clinic.

Dental patients also receive preventive care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss to support healthier habits after the clinic.
RAM Compared to “Traditional” Healthcare Clinics
RAM Clinics may be temporary, but they are fully equipped to deliver professional care. Dental teams use diagnostic tools including digital X-rays, fillings, etc. Many clinics also include a mobile panoramic X-ray unit for more advanced diagnostics.
Many conditions treated in a primary care office can also be treated at RAM pop-up and telehealth clinics.
Typically, after visiting an optometrist and choosing a new pair of glasses, patients can expect to wait weeks for their new glasses. That’s not the case at RAM Clinics; most patients leave the clinic with their new glasses that day. Our mobile optical lab allows us to cut down on the wait time. The glasses are made quickly and provided at no cost.
