Remote Area Medical is still in need of additional volunteers at the RAM Wise Expedition

ROCKFORD, TN (June 19, 2018) – Remote Area Medical- RAM™ — a major non-profit provider of mobile medical clinics delivering free, high-quality, dental, vision and medical care to underserved and uninsured individuals– will operate its 19th annual Wise, Virginia clinic, July 20 – 22, 2018 at Wise County Fairgrounds. Services available at the clinic include dental cleanings, dental fillings, dental extractions, dental x-rays, eye exams, eyeglass prescriptions, eyeglasses made on-site, mental health services, osteopathic manipulation services, women’s health exams, and general medical exams. All RAM services are free and no ID is required.

The Wise RAM clinic will be held at the Wise County Fairgrounds on State Route 680. The parking lot will open no later than 12 a.m. midnight on Friday, July 20. Patients will receive a numbered ticket as they enter the parking lot and will be seen in chronological order according to their ticket number when clinic doors open at 6 a.m. The same process will repeat Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22.

“RAM and the Health Wagon are proud to be returning to the fairgrounds in Wise County, Virginia to provide the community with these much-needed dental, vision, and medical services. We are fully committed to ensuring this annual event is available to those in the area that need it,” said RAM Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Eastman.

Roger Gunter, CEO of Aetna Better Health in Virginia – one of this year’s major sponsors of the RAM Wise Expedition – says, “We at Aetna know that a positive health impact can be made when communities work together to tackle health disparities,” said Gunter. “Data tells us that only about 10 percent of our health is a result of what happens in a doctor’s office. By contrast, 30 percent of our overall health comes from our genetic makeup and 60 percent from our social and physical environment. We’re proud to have an active role in the Wise RAM clinic. For many, this is the only health care they’ll receive all year.” Aetna is also funding and distributing 1,500 boxes filled with healthy foods at the RAM Wise Expedition with the assistance of Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

According to U.S. census data, the poverty rate in Wise County is 23.5%, which far exceeds the national average of 12.7%. Additionally, Wise County ranks 126th out of Virginia’s 133 counties/cities in terms of health quality. Because of these factors, RAM expects to see great demand from residents in Wise and surrounding communities during the three-day clinic. “Last year alone, RAM provided $1.4 million dollars’ worth of free care to more than 2,000 people, right here in Wise County, Virginia,” said RAM Founder & President Stan Brock.  “Until something changes, millions of people in this country will remain without access to affordable health care.”

RAM is still in need of additional dental, vision, and medical professionals to volunteer their time and skills in Wise. Thanks to state legislation, clinical professionals licensed in any of the 50 states can treat patients at RAM clinics in Virginia. For more information about volunteering at a RAM mobile medical clinic, visit www.ramusa.org or call 865-579-1530.
