Approximately 58 million Americans are 65 years old or older. That number is expected to continue to grow [National Council on Aging]. As the number of people over 65 rises, it is important to monitor health needs and make positive changes to maintain quality of life. This month is Healthy Aging Month, learn more about healthy routines for yourself and your loved ones.
Healthy Aging Month is an awareness campaign dedicated to supporting the overall wellbeing of people of all ages. Healthy aging applies to the whole body and aspects of one’s overall health. Assessing habits and behaviors is the first step in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Remote Area Medical (RAM®) is committed to acting as a resource for preventative care information and promoting healthy living — this month we are discussing the importance of healthy aging in observance of Healthy Aging Month.
Tips for Healthy Aging:
Eat and Drink Healthy —
Make sure to eat healthy, balanced meals, with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean proteins. Eating well can prevent certain health problems and may support brain function [National Institutes of Health (NIH)]. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides resources about healthy eating for all age ranges.
Get Active —
Exercise is important for all ages! Aerobic and muscle strengthening activities are recommended. Throughout the week adults should strive to achieve at least 2 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. For high-intensity aerobic activity, the weekly recommendation for adults is 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
Older adults may consider adding balance training as well as aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. Exercise intensity should be relative to one’s overall health and level of fitness [health.gov].
Keep Your Mind Active —
Brainteaser activities like crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, reading, playing cards and putting together jigsaw puzzles stimulate the brain, acting like ‘brain workout’ [Mayo Clinic Health Systems].
Get a Good Night’s Sleep —
Adults of all ages should aim for 7-9 consecutive hours of sleep each night. Try to follow a regular sleep schedule, avoid napping in the afternoon and evening, avoid using electronics at nighttime and try to relax before bed [NIH]. These tips can help promote a healthy night’s sleep and may help prevent some health concerns from developing or worsening.
Many health issues become heightened when the body is not getting enough sleep. Issues such as insomnia are more common for older adults. Other behaviors like movement disorders, restless leg syndrome, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior are also more common for older adults.
Get Regular Check Ups —
Regular checkups by your primary care physician can help with early disease detection, as well as monitoring risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is important to review any health concerns to your doctor to prevent further health issues from developing [Mayo Clinic].
When to Make Healthy Aging Choices —
There is no such thing as ‘too early’ when it comes to making healthy aging choices Making small changes to your routine can have a big impact on one’s health and wellness. There are many misconceptions about aging, the National Instituted of Health has compiled a list of 10 common misconceptions about aging.
