Remote Area Medical (RAM) provides all types of care to patients in need of services — from diagnostic care for preexisting conditions to preventive care. For those who are uninsured or underinsured, these services are critical.
Kasey is one of the millions of Americans who do not have health insurance. She and her husband attended the clinic in Sparta, Tennessee to receive the vision care they would not otherwise have access to.
This is not the first time Kasey and her husband have attended a RAM Clinic — she first attended a clinic in Knoxville for abscesses in her mouth. No other dentist or oral surgeon she saw would treat her, no matter the status of her insurance. At the Knoxville RAM Clinic she was able to be treated, and the affected teeth were pulled.
“. . . These people cared enough that they pulled my teeth, had an emergency team set up because it was so bad they thought they might have to ambulance me, even. But it was an amazing thing. The thing that these people do, the time they spend the dedication, these are people that have true kindness left in them.” Kasey said.
While she is able to visit her local health department for many of her health needs, it does not offer vision services. At the RAM Clinic, she was able to get the vision care she needed at no cost. Kasey left the clinic with an updated glasses prescription and a brand-new pair of glasses.
Because they cannot access it otherwise, Kasey and her husband attend RAM Clinics annually to receive vision care. Kasey’s husband was born blind in one eye, which often makes him uncomfortable when receiving eye examinations. She shared that he does not feel the same at RAM Clinics — in fact, he looks forward to it.
“It has been wonderful. And everybody, from the doctors to the staff, everybody has always been so kind. It is wonderful thing, and I recommend it to any and everybody I ever meet,” Kasey said.
The Importance of Annual Eye Examinations —
Kasey and her husband are a perfect example of why RAM exists — to give people an opportunity to receive preventive or diagnostic care. By annually attending RAM Clinics for vision care the couple is working to prevent future eye health complications.
The American Optometric Association recently updated its guidelines, now recommending that adults 18 years or older should receive annual eye examinations. This recommendation change comes with the hopes of preventing future vision loss.
Annual vision examinations can catch early signs of many different eye diseases, such as: cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degermation. Those with conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes may need more frequent eye examinations and should consult their doctor [Center for Disease Control].
