For 21-year-old Grace and her boyfriend, making sure they take care of their health is a priority. Even though this young couple can’t afford health, dental, or vision insurance, they are finding ways to take care of themselves.
“My main hobby, I would say, is like making sure me and my family are okay 24/7,” Grace said. “Health is important, that’s why we came here today.”
That is why they decided to attend the Remote Area Medical (RAM®) free clinic in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
A Free Clinic This Young Couple Couldn’t Miss
While researching their different options for free healthcare, Grace came across RAM’s TikTok account. Even though she thought it may be too good to be true, she gave RAM a chance.
“I looked it up, and sure enough there was one right here in Bethlehem, and I work at the Ford right down the street, literally. So, I was like, ‘We’re going, we’re going, we’re going. We have to go!’”
For this young couple, the clinic could not have come at a better time. Both of them needed a vision exam and new glasses; Grace needed to see a doctor for a pap smear. Her boyfriend has asthma and did not have an inhaler and was on the last of his nebulizer.
Working full-time jobs pays the bills for this couple, but without insurance it’s not enough to cover two dental checkups, eye exams, pairs of glasses, and doctor visits. Though they missed a car show they were looking forward to, they knew this was an opportunity for them to get the care they needed but could not otherwise afford. They put their health first.
A New Pair of Glasses
A new pair of glasses was a must for Grace. Her last pair, nearly two years old, had been super glued back together before they broke entirely. She’s been forced to go without for months.
For Grace and RAM Volunteer Leigh, picking out a new pair of glasses was some of the most fun they’d had all day. After trying six different pairs, the two finally found the perfect pair.

RAM Clinics, Making Healthcare Accessible
While going to the doctor before left Grace feeling nervous and intimidated, at the RAM Clinic she felt comfortable and had none of the anxiety she’d had before. And because she doesn’t have insurance, Grace cannot even remember the last time she was able to go to the doctor.
She hadn’t seen a dentist in at least five years. The couple returned on Sunday for dental services.
For families like Grace’s, RAM Clinics relieve a big financial burden and allow them to take care of their health, before it becomes a problem. Grace’s message to all of RAM’s supporters, donors, and volunteers is, “Please keep going. Please keep this running. It’s needed. It’s important.”
