MEET RILEY
Finding Comfort and Care When It Mattered Most
“I was a little bit nervous when I arrived. I would definitely do it again, and I would recommend it to other people,” Riley said.
Riley came to the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, with her boyfriend, Liam, and his mother.
Liam’s mother had been to a RAM Clinic before. She knew it was the opportunity Riley and Liam needed to receive care they had been putting off because of the cost.
For Riley, the need for care came with another barrier: fear.
She could not remember the last time she had seen a healthcare provider. Like many RAM patients, she had avoided care for as long as possible because going to the doctor or dentist felt stressful, expensive, and out of reach.
“I’ve just kind of avoided going. I don’t really like going to the doctor."
Riley and Liam both came to the clinic for dental care. Riley thought she only needed a cleaning.
But after an X-ray, RAM volunteers found a cavity that needed to be filled.
Riley was nervous, but the volunteer dentists talked with her throughout the procedure and helped her feel at ease.

After her filling, Riley also received a free vision exam. She had not had an eye exam or new glasses in at least six years.
At the RAM Clinic, Riley did not have to choose between dental care, clear vision, and the other necessities in her life.

The Impact of Care
After getting her cavity filled the day before, she returned for the cleaning she originally expected to receive. Riley is not usually a morning person. But waking up early was worth it.
She and Liam left the clinic with care that would have otherwise cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
For Riley, the weekend brought not only much-needed treatment, but also relief, comfort, and the confidence to seek care again.
