What Are Free Health Clinics and How Do They Work?
Free health clinics exist to remove barriers to care for individuals and families who may not have access to routine medical services. Remote Area Medical Clinics are short-term, volunteer-powered events that deliver high-quality care at no cost.
Here’s how RAM Clinics operate:
- Clinics are first-come, first-served
- Patients receive a number upon arrival, which determines their place in line
- Care is provided by licensed medical professionals and trained volunteers
- Services are offered until daily capacity is reached
Because each clinic depends on volunteer availability, services and capacity may vary be location.
How to Get Into a Free Remote Area Medical Clinic
We open the parking lot at clinic sites at 12 midnight. Often, folks begin arriving several hours before the parking lot even opens. We can’t provide a specific arrival time, but the earlier you arrive, the greater your chances of being seen by a doctor.
Numbers will be distributed as people begin to enter the parking lot. All patients must be physically present to receive a number.
Be aware that leaving after receiving a number forfeits your place in line. Appointments are not scheduled in advance, and numbers cannot be held for friends or family members.
What to Bring to a Free Remote Area Medical Clinic
You are not required to bring anything to receive care, including ID or insurance information. However, to make your visit more comfortable, we recommend bringing:
- A list of medications you currently take and/or the medications themselves
- Food and water
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Chairs, blankets, or umbrellas if needed
- Entertainment such as books or games for waiting periods
We hope that our volunteer providers will be able to see you quickly and efficiently. However, we cannot always predict how many volunteer doctors will be available at each free clinic. Everyone has a smoother, more pleasant experience when they arrive prepared to wait.
